The Bedroom Update - Serenity Now!

Updated: Sep 8, 2023

As an interior designer, I am often asked by clients where to begin when updating their Primary bedroom. This is a space where we spend a significant amount of time and it should reflect our personal style and serve as a sanctuary for relaxation and rest.

One of my first questions is always, "What style do you envision in this room and how do you want to feel in this space?" This particular client said "Just make it so it doesn't look like my Grandmother's place in Florida!" HA! Literally laughed out loud reading their questionnaire. So "Grandmother Coastal" was out...but they knew what they DIDN'T want and that's a great place to start! Often what clients are looking for is a room that induces calm and serenity with a touch of sophistication and luxury. Maybe your bedroom is a collection of furniture that you've had forever...some pieces are from your parents or other family members, and you just didn't know where else to put it! I'm guilty of that in my own home. Always, putting myself and our bedroom at the end of a long list of people and rooms that need attention!

I'm here to tell you that it's TIME to put yourself at the top of the list and make your bedroom a beautiful suite that you can't wait to get to at the end of the day! Doesn't that sound like something you'd be exciting about and also, something you entirely deserve!

That all sounds great, but where do I start?

Here are some tips on where to start for a primary bedroom update:

  1. Define your style and color scheme: Before you start any updates, it's important to define your personal style and choose a color scheme that suits your taste. Take inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, or interior design magazines to help you define your style. Consider the colors that you love and that make you feel relaxed and comfortable. You can choose one or two main colors for the room and then add accents with complementary colors.

  2. Evaluate your furniture: Take a good look at the furniture in your bedroom and decide what needs to be updated. Your bed is the focal point of the room, so if it's outdated or uncomfortable, consider investing in a new one. If you have a lot of furniture in the room, consider decluttering and keeping only the essentials. You can also consider repurposing old furniture pieces by giving them a fresh coat of paint or new hardware.

  3. Lighting: Lighting is an important aspect of any room and can completely change the mood and atmosphere. Consider adding sconces, bedside lamps or updating the ceiling fixture to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Dimmer switches are a great addition as they allow you to adjust the lighting according to your needs.

  4. Textiles: Textiles can add texture and warmth to a room. Consider updating your bedding, pillows, and curtains with fabrics that complement your color scheme and style. Layering different textures such as wool, linen, and cotton can create a cozy and inviting space.

  5. Art and Decor: Finally, consider adding art and decor that reflects your personal style and adds interest to the room. Artwork can be a great focal point and can tie in with your color scheme. Decorative items such as vases, candles, and books can add personality to the room and create a more welcoming space.

With these tips, your bedroom can become the cozy and inviting sanctuary you've always dreamed of.
